Napoleon Dynamite

napoleon_dynamite_poster

Aaron watched this and loved it.

He insisted our entire family watch it together and so we did. I laughed when I first saw this in theaters. This time, though, I felt really touched, especially Napoleon’s last desperate, ultimately triumphant, act. How sweet. How kooky. I’m not sure why I was so touched. Maybe I’m nervous about the kids going into middle school.

Favorite scene: Napoleon grudgingly feeding ham to Tina, his grandmother’s pet lama. Now when we go to feed the chickens instead of saying “here chick, chick, chick,” we say “Tina, come get some ham!” In fact, we’re using this line a lot around the house lately. I hear it at breakfast. I hear it at bedtime. I hear it if Holly is trying to motivate the kids to do something and they want to wage a low-level rebellion. Yesterday I threatened to yell it at their swim meet, instead of my usual “Go, go, go!” cheer. I would have done it, too, but I didn’t want Aaron to laugh in the middle of his heat.

Aaron does a really compelling imitation of Napoleon Dynamite saying, “Gosh!” If you see him, you must ask him to do it for you. If he doesn’t want to, he may say, “Tina, come get your ham.”

Which is just as good.

The Countdown Begins

junior

Timmy and Carrie went to the hospital last night. When we found out, there was much revelry here in Washington. But I called a few hours ago and it looks like they ended up getting sent back home. The due date is still a few weeks out, so I guess this is fine, except that I am excited and can’t wait for news of the birth.

When we got the call from Tim, we were all in a pizza parlor getting ready to eat after seeing Up (which is as fabulous as everyone is saying it is). This was Holly’s celebratory birthday dinner, even though her birthday was this past Friday. I thought we had an eventful weekend, with Holly’s birthday, a couple of Little League baseball games and a school production of the Wiz.

But think how eventful Timmy and Carrie’s weekend must have been, with a race up RT 1 to get to the hospital.

Urban Chicken Farming

5-17-2009 006

It started about three or four years ago: Holly suggested we raise chickens. I scoffed. But in the last year or so, Holly got Kennedy on board and now here we are with a chicken coop in the backyard.

When we first got the chicks at Easter, they were mighty cute. They were just two days old and would wander around in the tank under the heat lamp, occasionally nodding off and tilting over, like little junkies in the park.

Now they’ve more than quadrupled in size. Holly says some of them might get twice as big as they are now. The tank we’ve been keeping them in is too small. They squawk and whistle and battle one another.

Holly says they need the heat lamp for eight weeks—early June. Despite this, I built the coop over the last two weekends, and we’ve been putting them inside it during the day. I’m waiting for the material for the coop roof to be delivered, so for now there is no roof on the coop.

You have to hope a hawk doesn’t swoop down and grab one the peeps.

Mirror, Mirror On the Wall, Who’s the Nicest One of All?

Tonight I find a Word file on my desktop named, “Kennedys the nicest.doc.” Sometimes the kids forget and log on to my desktop. No big deal.

I open the file and find the following pie chart that graphs the niceness quotient of my family:

If you can’t read the key, all you really need to know is that Kennedy is the big green piece. It’s an active pie chart, which I’m not even sure I know how to make.

If you look at the stats that drive the chart, Kennedy is a 2000 on the niceness scale, while Holly is a respectably close 1999.  Aaron and I fared much worse.

Under the chart, the text reads:

“As you can see here, I am the nicest person here.”

I love that girl.

A New BM2 in the House

bm2

Tim was recently promoted to boatswains mate petty officer second class, otherwise known as BM2. This is the new patch he will wear on his sleeve (if it’s not on his sleeve already).

With the baby on the way, this couldn’t have come at a better time. When Holly and I were down in Florida last month, we visited Tim and Carrie’s apartment. All of us were hanging out in the freshly painted nursery, and I heard Tim refer to Carrie as the CO. I laughed.

This is how I feel about Holly, too.

Meet the Navarros

Here is Tim with Carrie, his new wife, and the Navarros, his in-laws. I am so proud of him. None of the older Navarros speak English, but that didn’t stop Tim from dancing and kissing all the women and hanging out and talking trash with all the men. I could have never done that in my twenties.

Quick Trip to Miami

IMG_8751

Miami was a heck of a lot of fun. I thought it might be similar to San Diego or LA, but it’s a much different feel. More tropical. The birds outside our hotel sounded like the jungle noise you hear in the movies. We stayed in Fort Lauderdale, which was a little off the beaten path for seeing Tim and Carry, but a very beautiful place to be in its own right.

This was the view off the balcony of our room:

Private beach at our hotel:

They had these permanent, collapsible beach tents installed on the beach. I haven’t seen them in Jersey, Delaware, or anywhere here on the West Coast. You put them up and huddle inside and it feels like you’re in a big conch shell. Especially cool at night, under the stars.

Me giving Aaron sand boobs. You probably shouldn’t do this to a kid in puberty, but he took it like a mensch.

Ed, Tim’s step-dad, took us all out to eat an awesome Cuban place in South Beach.

South Beach is notable for having mannequins in retail windows with enormous breasts. You would think just my eleven year old son would notice a detail like this, but these mannequin breasts grabbed me and my wife’s attention, too. What a zoo! I love Cuban food. I have to get one of those little Cuban espresso makers.

I have more to post about the wedding, but I am still collecting my thoughts and fighting off a cold. It was a very happy, joyus occasion, and I want to pass on as much of it as I can for those who couldn’t make it.
