3:10 to Yuma

Just a great movie. This is a celebration of free-spirited individuality, a classic story of rising above one’s circumstances, just like most of the good old John Wayne and John Ford Westerns of the 50s and 40s. But it’s also got a Twenty-first Century sensibility, with Russell Crowe as Ben Wade, a personable cutthroat who actually wears a black hat and Christian Bale as Dan Evans, a gimpy farmer who clearly knows how to motivate even the most desperate of men. I don’t want to spoil it, but it’s got a great script. I particularly liked the two reveals from last reel as Evans convinces the outlaw Wade to do something crazy.

Eastern Promises

Eastern Promises best feature is a solid plot that doesn’t seem to fall apart with scrutiny.

Viggo Mortensen ends up being rather engaging as Nikolai, but I was on the fence about him and the whole movie for way too long. That’s bad, but by far the biggest problem is that all the characters and situations are fucking depressing. Except for Naomi Watts, the bleeding-heart lead chick, everyone is a fuck up that speaks Russian and wears poor fitting black leather jackets.

It’s also got a lot of blood churning slasher shots. When did thriller movies become the new slasher movies?

I liked the last half hour quite a bit, but the first hour and a half seemd to drag on for me.

WANTED: Have You Seen This Boy?

I feel bad about this.

I was egging my nephew to bend this poor duck over as far as he could, so I could capture just the right angle. Next thing I know, there was this big industrial SPRONG sound and the poor duck fell over dead.

I let Alex take all the heat for this, but it was partly my fault.

Ok, mostly my fault. I said I feel bad.

Aaaaahhhhhhhhh!

Aaron in command of the ATV’s throttle and me wishing I were somewhere else. On our recent vacation, my whole family visited my older brother Tom, who owns 40 acres somewhere in the hills of southwestern Pennsylvania. The ATVs are very popular with the nephews. I had a blast with them, too.

At one point in the afternoon Aaron came over to me and said, “Guess what I want for Christmas, Dad?” I caught my brother Tony snickering so I knew what Aaron was going to ask for.

“An ATV?” I asked him. “You ask your Uncle Tony for that!”

Daddy’s Little Girl

8-19-2007 136

Not sure why, but Kennedy seems to love to humiliate me in front of other females. Earlier this week after soccer practice, I was talking to one of the other moms as we walked to our cars. Kennedy ran up to us and chirped, “Do you want to marry my daddy?”

I cringed. The other mom took it all in stride, pointing out that she was already married. I tried to appear amused, but this wasn’t the first time this had happened.

Last month after theater practice our whole family was headed toward the car. I dawdled about half a block behind, chatting with one of the other kids from the play. Kennedy came racing back down the block, stiff-armed with her chin jutting out. The girl beside me was only 13, but Kennedy laid into her.

“You’re not married to him,” she scolded.

The poor kid didn’t know what to say. Neither did I. Kennedy felt no such compunction.

“You stay away from my daddy,” she said, throwing her arms around my waist.

Wasn’t really sure what to make of that then, not sure now. Kennedy never scolds me, just the hapless females who speak to me. Nor does she yell at her mother for speaking to men.

I guess she’s just daddy’s little girl.

We Have a Winner

Huge kudos to my good friend Sarah Morgan for coming up with an excellent tag line for this site, Past imperfect.

I love it. It’s a wonderful play on the verb tense theme in the title and an unabashed nod to past indiscretions. That’s exactly what I was looking for, but everything I came up with sounded like a requiem for a misspent youth. My life is much too good for anything that mournful, but this tag line is smart and funny. Sassy.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! Sarah Morgan has won my undying devotion!

My Father’s Summers: A Daughter’s Memoir

Kathi Appelt created a memoir entirely of short, evocative word poems. Her theme is the loneliness and longing she felt for her father as a teenager. All of her poems build on this main theme and only rarely do some of the poems feel a little forced. Some of the poems are quite good, but I like this memoir mostly because it’s so different. Not all memoir has to be a straight story, and I applaud her for trying something so difficult and managing to pull it off so well.

City of Brotherly Love

When we go back east to visit my folks, we like to show the kids a different city. Last week it was Philadelphia.

After I finished taking the shot above, I looked up and saw a young man chatting with Holly and the kids. When I got closer, I realized he was asking for money.

I rarely give money on the street, but I didn’t want to cut him off, so I waited for him to finish his story. It was a pitiful story and he ended it with a plea for a few dollars. Before I could decline, Aaron chirped, “Sure!” and started rummaging through all his pockets. That’s what I love so much about Aaron: empathetic to a fault.

Both Holly and I just looked at him. The panhandler looked at him. There was a pregnant pause. Aaron looked up at us looking at him and said, “Isn’t anyone else going to give this guy some money?”

Tagline Writing Contest

My blog is having an identity crisis.

I was never happy with calling this site, Tim Elhajj. Although pragmatic, it seemed somewhat clumsy and unimaginative. I tried to spice it up with a silly tagline — “white boy with a funny last name” or “another happy parent blogging about his kids” — but ultimately these didn’t satisfy either.

My wife suggested the title, Present Tense, and I love it. Holly is great with titles. My big project for the past two years has been writing my memoir (which is in present tense), but the name goes further than that, capturing the satisfaction I feel writing about the kids, my favorite movies, or even technology and my own unfortunate decisions. So here’s to Holly Huckeba!

But now I need a tagline and I could use some help.

If you can think of a good tagline that goes with the title, First Person, Present Tense, pop it into a comment or send it to me. I’m all ears. I am game for almost anything, but the funny ones will get the most attention.
